1. Khadja Nin (Burundi) - Afrika Obota - 4:48
What a voice and what drama! Pierre Akendengue of Gabon wrote this fine song, which is an ode to African unity and prosperity. The title means "Mother Africa" in the Miéne language, a Bantu dialect of Gabon.


2. Nipa (Ghana) - Oba Desenfo - 3:12

3. Daby Balde (Senegal) - Waino Blues - 4:21
About a visit to a marabout, an Islamic spiritual leader. Daby Balde is from the southern part of Senegal. Here is a biography with video clips.


4. Hijas del Sol (Equatorial Guinea) - E ria ë nta - 3:07
The "Daughters of the Sun" of Bantu heritage are from the island of Bioko off the coast of Cameroon. Here is a biography on Calabash.


5. Ntsakala (Congo DRC) - Mbote - 4:27
An "ntsakala" is a maraca-like rhythm instrument from the Congo, made of a tin can punched with holes and filled with seeds. This Congolese-Swiss duo performs folk music characteristic of southern Congo.


6. Zodwa (South Africa) - Indlela - 4:58

7. Fiona Mukasa (Uganda) - Wamilele (Everlasting God) - 4:46
Downloadable from this page, which has other interesting Ugandan music. Uganda has a very lively gospel music culture; see for example Holyspins. Fiona Mukasa's late father, Elly Wamala, was also a renowned musician in Uganda.


8. Original Zengela Band (Kenya) - Sophie - 4:55
A wonderful group from Mombasa about which very little can be found, though the number of links on Google continues to rise.

11. Seyi, Mr Jeje (Nigeria) - Moni Jesu - 3:09
A highly unusual and rhythmically complex hymn: "God is good". Here is the artist's website.


12. Coco Mbassi (Cameroon) - D - 4:20
Coco Mbassi writes all of her music and lyrics, sometimes collaborating with her classical-bassist husband. Her music is soulful, private and spiritual. Her Calabash page has a very informative biography.
