Scholarships

The Kasiisi Project's educational efforts continue to expand. We began funding scholarships in the late 1990s. The goal is to enable worthy students to progress through secondary school and college or university educations. 2009 Scholars

Though secondary school has recently become state-sponsored and free, the availability of good secondary schooling remains very low. Private secondary schools that board students are expensive, at several hundred USD per year, more than Uganda's per-capita average income of 300 USD. Only 14% of primary students go on to secondary school. College and university schooling are not free and are considerably more expensive than secondary, at 1100 USD or more. As of mid 2010 we are funding almost 100 students in secondary schools and universities in western Uganda and in the capital city of Kampala. Scholar individual photos »

Over time, we hope that more and more of these capable, energetic and well-informed scholars will return to the community to inspire and guide change for the better.

BOARDING SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

All Kasiisi Project scholarship students attend secondary boarding schools which provide electricity to study by, regular meals, few chores, no time wasted in travel to and from school each day, academic support on site, strict supervision of girls, and higher academic standards.

Ugandan secondary schools follow the British academic system, which require "O" Level exams in 8-10 subjects at the end of 4 years. Students then either attend vocational college, or continue with 2 more years of secondary school after which they take "A" Level exams in 3 or 4 subjects. The "A" level is followed by college or university.

SPONSOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Single Family Sponsorship: A commitment of 4 years of boarding school tuition ($875 the first year) to be paid annually by December 1st. You can also pay in three installments with the next two payments in April and July. Tuition will increase by 10% a year for the next 3 years to cover inflation and changing exchange rates.
  • Joint Family Sponsorship: If you do not wish to commit to the amounts for a single family sponsorship, but still wish to contribute, we will try to team you up with another family to share the costs proportionally.
  • Further support after the first year: Our hope and expectation is that if your child successfully completes 4 years of secondary school you will wish to support them as they continue with secondaryy school or go to vocational college. However, this is your choice and if you prefer not to continue your support, we will cover additional tuition if possible.

KASIISI PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Kasiisi Project Scholarship Committee selects candidates, chooses schools, regularly visits and supervises students, maintains contact with staff, monitors performance, arranges extra tutoring, and meets regularly with students and their families.
  • Information: You will receive biographical information and photos of your student, their family and home.
  • Accountability: All tuition payments will be paid directly to the schools and all accounts are available for inspection. A tuition reminder note will be sent out to you each fall.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performance: Scholars must maintain a good academic record and are required to submit their report cards at the end of every term in order for the next term's tuition to be paid. A poorly performing scholar will be given one term's probation and if no improvement is seen they may lose their scholarship.
  • Progress: Scholars are required to be keep you informed of their progress through their school reports and by writing to you regularly. We aim for 3 letters per year.
  • Community Service: Scholars give back to the project through service in recognition of their good fortune in receiving a scholarship. Muhumuza Tito volunteered at Kyanyawara Primary school after finishing teacher's college and now teaches at Kasiisi Primary School. Zahura Adolf tutors younger students during his school vacations. Rwabuhinga Francis, Tumusiime Francis and Nyakato Flavian help with teaching and project administration at the Project schools.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributions: Parents or guardians are responsible for providing transport and bedding, uniforms etc.
  • Support: Parents are required to meet with the Scholarship Management Committee at the end of every term to go over report cards and discuss their child's performance.
